NEW DELHI, April 23

THE Union Agriculture Minister, Mr Ajit Singh, has said that the Centre will soon mount a publicity campaign to discourage farmers from planting Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company Ltd's (Mahyco) Bt cotton in northern States such as Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.

Mr Singh speaking at a meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee attached to his Ministry here on Tuesday said the Centre was currently holding discussions with the concerned State Governments on not planting Bt cotton hybrids in the North. The hybrids were approved for commercial cultivation in the southern and western regions last month.
