Need to educate farmers on GM crops stressed

Our Bureau

BANGALORE, April 19

A GOOD farmer relationship management with adequate information would have prevented part of the brouhaha over Monsanto's Bt cotton trails a couple of years back, said Dr Manu Kulkarni, Chairman of the HOPE Foundation, representing farmers and former member of Unicef.

``Everyone talks of customer relationship management. I have never heard of anyone talking farmer relationship management,'' he implied.

Misinformation was also the reason for NGOs ganging up against GMOs, Dr Kulkarni said. While farmers he had met were actively interested in GM crops, they did not have access to enough information, he said.

There was no one to clear doubts and answer queries. ``There is a need for education from the highest level to the lowest,'' he said.
