The Hindu Business Line : SAIL trims limestone production

STEEL Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has stopped production at some of its limestone quarries and scaled down output at some others, opting instead to recycle the slag produced at its plants, and develop new mines.

Company sources said that due to the high silica content in the mines of Madhya Pradesh, it has been decided to close down the Satna limestone quarry, while scaling down the production at some of its mines in Orissa. These mines mostly served SAIL's plants at Durgapur and Rourkela where the requirement is being met by recycling the slag produced by the plants. ``This is an environment-friendly measure, besides being a cost saver'', sources said.

``Across the mines of the raw material division (RMD) of SAIL, steps are being taken to reduce expenditure on contractual jobs, reduction of `dead rent' paid for unutilised land. RMD was all set to enhance production and dispatches to Durgapur, Rourkela and Bokaro steel plants from 11.5 million tonnes produced in the last fiscal to 13.7 million tonnes this fiscal.

The release said that this would enable the plants to produce a record 8.3 million tonnes of hot metal or `liquid iron'.

Referring to the iron ore mines, the release said that with productivity of RSP's blast furnace being affected by the quality of the iron ore deposit of the Barsua mines (to which RSP is attached), it has now been decided to link it with the Kiriburu-Meghataburu mines.
