Software Corporate - Diversification Wipro unfolds new business segment Our Bureau
BANGALORE, April 16 WIPRO Ltd has announced a new business segment in its fold, Wipro Healthcare and Life Science. The company has appointed Mr D.A. Prasanna, as Vice Chairman, to head the division, said the Chairman, Mr Azim Premji. Mr Prasanna, earlier Managing Director of Wipro GE Medical Systems will continue to be on the board of GEMS and will be a member of the Corporate Executive Council. He will also be the Chairman of Wipro Fluid Power. Existing business in the healthcare area from Wipro Biomed and Wipro Technologies will be transferred to the new segment. The division already has a momentum, with over $15 million revenues from the business last year, said Mr Prasanna. Healthcare and Life Sciences will have three main areas of business solutions for hospitals and health insurance companies; Bioinformatics solutions to Life Sciences and IT solutions to medical and analytical devices companies. The new division will have 130-140 people. Being a specialised area, PhDs and people with experience in protein chemistry, molecular science and so on will be taken. Wipro GE and Wipro Life Sciences will not compete and are complementary, Mr Premji said. Mr Prasanna said that Wipro wanted to be a ``leader in the area in a decade'' and if acquisitions are mergers were ``the strategy required'', they would do it.
