Kerala: Bishops oppose decision on toddy
Our Bureau
KOCHI: The Kerala Catholic Bishops Council Madhyavirudha Commission has said that the State Government's move to hand over toddy distribution to private individuals could not be accepted by the Catholic Church.
A statement issued here said that the decision to hand over toddy distribution to individuals was against the declared policy of the UDF Government to implement total prohibition in the State in a phased manner. If the current policy were followed, it would create more liquor tragedies.
KCBC demand is that liquor trade be conducted under the supervision of the Government and for any liquor tragedies in future, the Government should be held responsible.
The Statement also said that the UDF Government should consider its promise to take a favourable look at re-establishing sections 232 and 447 of the Panchayat Nagarapalika bill.
It pointed out that although the Government claimed that 5,987 toddy shops were operational in the State, less than 4,000 shops were active and most of these were in existence in violation of the rules. - Our Bureaus
