Marriott Intl bullish on India

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, April 15

THE US hospitality major, Marriott International, which plans to open a J.W. Marriott hotel in Chennai, is bullish about business prospects in India.

"We hope to break ground in Chennai fairly soon. However, we would not like to talk about the details of the project till everything has been finalised. And, we would like to have a presence and awareness in the gateway and secondary cities whether it be Hyderabad or Bangalore,'' the President and Managing Director, Marriott Lodging International, Mr Ed Fuller, said at a press conference here today.

While declining to divulge details of the Chennai property, officials said that the hotel would be built from scratch and be completed in the near term.

The Senior Vice-President, Asia-Pacific and Australia, Marriott International Operations, Mr Geoff Garside, added that the company would not like to speculate just yet on the number of hotels it was likely to have in the near future.

"We would like to have quality hotels in key areas. The company is very excited about the prospects that India has to offer," Mr Garside said.
