Accidents Crisis management Web site launched Our Bureau
KOCHI, April 14 THE District Crisis Management Group has launched a Web site for the Ernakulam district, providing information on emergency preparedness, response and mitigation. The Web site, sponsored and hosted by Kochi Refineries Ltd, can be accessed at www.ekmcrisismgt.com. The site is owned and managed by Ernakulam District Crisis Management Group, an apex body constituted at the district level under the Collector to deal with major chemical accidents and to provide expert guidance in managing a disaster. The group aims at preventing man-made disasters through assessment, preparedness, response and relief, mitigation and expertise and know-how acquisition. It would help in co-ordinating activities required to reduce human suffering and economic loss caused by natural and man-made disasters, including earthquakes, floods, landslides, gas leaks and fire. Launching the Web site, the Revenue Minister, Mr K.M. Mani, said that even decision-makers were confused and did not know who had to take the first step during a disaster. The general populace is also confused about the right person to contact at the time of a disaster, which often leads to more problems. The Minister hoped that a Web site of this kind would help them to manage any mega disaster and help the people in not panicking at the time of a crisis. The site will provide information on disasters and emergency situations, various hazardous industries and contact persons, various hazards and disaster situations applicable for Ernakulam area and guidelines to manage such emergencies and details on the disaster management team. The public can access the detailed action plan of the Emergency Control Cell as well as maps to aid relief work and evacuation. First aid and antidotes for disasters caused by chemical and biological substances, rules pertaining to emergency control, telephone numbers and address of emergency contacts etc., and details and contacts of hospitals and links to their Web sites are featured in the site. It would also contain pages for frequently asked questions and answers.
