Farmers plan rally against Bt cotton

Our Bureau

BANGALORE, April 14

THE Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS), a farmers association in the State, is planning a mass rally on April 17 at Dharwad to protest against the Government's clearance for commercial cultivation of transgenic `Bt' cotton.

The President of the KRRS, Prof M.D. Nanjundaswamy, said about one-lakh farmers were expected to participate in the rally to be held in the cotton-growing belt of North Karnataka. Farmer leaders like Mr Mahendra Singh Tikait and Mr Selva Muttu from Tamil Nadu would be addressing the rally, he said.

"We will first try to create awareness among the farming community about the ill-effects and the dangers of the Bt Cotton. Then a direct action will be launched against the seed traders and retailers who try to promote Bt cotton seeds, and also against the farmers who cultivate the transgenic crops,'' Mr Nanjundaswamy said.

"The timing to create awareness is also relevant as the cotton season is set to begin now in the south,'' he added.

It may be recalled that about two years ago, KRRS had destroyed the crop in several plots wherein Bt cotton trials were carried out in the State by Mahyco-Monsanto.
