Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala, Pondicherry ... the number of States pursuing the biotech gold is growing. Each one has planned vast acres of dedicated parks. Bangalore's s Biotech Park and the Genome Valley in Hyderabad will be the early starters.

Profiled below are a few companies that have made a mark in the field.

Novozymes

Among the leading biotech based industries with presence in Bangalore is Novozymes, the world's largest manufacturer of enzymes. The Danish company began its biotech research in 1941 and has factories in Denmark, Switzerland, China and the US.

The Novozymes portfolio of 75 types and 500 products ranges from the grease removing lipases to sweetening amylases. Alcohol, paper, leather, fuel, wine and juice, fats and oils are some of the sectors that use enzymes. The company enjoys a market share of 40 per cent worldwide.

Agatsya Microtek

Agriculture is a key area where biotechnologists are active. Bangalore-based Agatsya Microtek has recently begun production of agriculture input products such as plant growth promoters, products for soil health, soil erosion control and disease control. It is also bringing out low cost instrumentation and analytical and various other farm kits.

The company also offers consultancy services in biotech methods to improve yields.

Monsanto

Monsanto, a global leader in agricultural biotech solutions, is active in high yield crops, hybrid varieties like corn, cotton, sunflower; and weedicides. Its work in India began more than 50 years ago. In India, it launched Machete, its first rice herbicide, in 1975.
