Govt releases 1 lakh t onion for export

NEW DELHI, April 12

THE Government on Friday announced release of first batch of one lakh tonne of onion for export with immediate effect, out of the quota of seven lakh tonnes for 2002-03.

An official release said this had been decided on the recommendations of the inter-ministerial review committee. The designated agencies which would contract export include NAFED, Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board (MSAMB) (35,000 tonnes each), Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation Ltd (GAIC) (10,000 tonnes), the Spices Trading Corporation, A.P. State Trading Corporation, the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India Ltd (5000 tonnes each), the Karnataka State Cooperative Marketing Federation Ltd and the North Karnataka Onion Growers Cooperative Society (2000 tonnes each).

In 2001-02, the Government permitted export of seven lakh tonnes of onion.
