Karnataka: `Prolonged rains' hit mango yield

Our Bureau

BANGALORE: Mango yield in the State has hit a low of 50,000 tonnes — compared to the bumper crop of 10 lakh tonnes last year. The reduction in yield is such that the State will harvest only five per cent of its yield in the previous year, according to horticultural experts.

Explaining the cause for the drastic yield reduction this year, the Joint Director of Horticulture, Dr S.V. Hittalmakki, said that the prolonged rains last year had resulted in high moisture content in the soil and atmosphere, affecting the yield.
