Plantations seek to vacate stay on new wage pact

L.N. Revathy

COIMBATORE, April 6

THE estate managements' case for vacating the stay on the issue of the changed conditions of service of the plantation workmen is likely to be heard in a week's time.

A couple of non-signatory unions to the plantation wage settlements in the Nilgiris and Nilgiris-Wyanad area have approached the Madras High Court and have sought a stay of the proposed change of conditions of service of the plantation workmen. An interim stay has been granted.

Following this, the estate managements went on appeal to clarify their position and vacate the stay.

Plantation managements and unions in both these areas reached an accord on the wage issue early last month.

The unions had agreed to a cut, although it was not on the levels proposed by the managements.

But considering the slowdown in the industry they agreed for a cut with the rider that it could be revised if there was a change for the better.

The negotiations for settlement of wages are still on in the other plantation districts in the State.
