BANGALORE, April 1

NATIONAL Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard)'s financial assistance to Karnataka this year grew by 6 per cent to Rs 1,630 crore over the previous year, according to Mr S. M. Mehta, its Chief General Manager, Bangalore regional office.

The amount covered production credit, investment credit for farm and non-farm activities and rural infrastructure development, helping the State Government to contribute share capital and as grant assistance. This year, a number of proposals are expected in a new area— godowns for grain storage, said Mr Mehta. This follows announcement in the Budget extending the subsidy up to 55 percent currently available for cold storages to godowns.

Fourteen cold storage units had been set up in the State, Mr Mehta said. Of these seven were sanctioned in the last one year. This year should also see all the farmers in the State covered by the `Kisan credit card' scheme, Mr Mehta said. As of today, 6.17 lakh farmers have been issued credit cards. Nabard is trying a new experiment in the development of watersheds by roping in farmers as `partners' who will bear 16 per cent of the labour costs. The bank has allocated Rs 20 crore for watershed development covering an area of 40,000 hectares in 17 districts.

Around, 18,000 self-help groups availed credit totalling Rs 30 crore during the year. Grant assistance to farmers clubs (there are 1,041 in the State now) was Rs 12 lakh. In the non-farm areas, Nabard's District Rural Industries Development project helps create sustainable employment through handicrafts etc. The third such project has been taken up in Chamrajanagar.

As many as 53 rural enterpreneurship programs were carried out during the year. The settlement rate has been 50-60 per cent, Mr Mehta said. The Nabard Capital Gains Bonds has mobilised Rs 3,248 crore till date of which Karnataka's share was Rs 183 crore, Mr Mehta added.
