Japan extends aid for third phase of bivoltine project

BANGALORE, March 28

THE Japanese Government has decided to extend its assistance to India in promoting the third phase of the bivoltine sericulture project in the country.

Speaking at a function here the Japanese Ambassador to India, Mr Hiroshi Hirabayashi, said his Government had decided to extend its assistance to India for the next five years so that the real sustainability of the bivoltine project was attained. The quantum and the mode of assistance were yet to be decided.

The second phase of the Japanese International Co-operation Agency (JICA)-assisted project for promotion of popularising practical bivoltine sericulture technology (PPBST) came to an end on Wednesday.

Mr Hirabayashi said mulberry sericulture was almost extinct in Japan, once known to be the largest producer of silk. ``Our expertise, know-how and attachment to sericulture have been revived here,'' he said adding that the success of the JICA-assisted project was a great landmark and tribute to the Indo- Japanese relations, which is fifty years old.

The third phase of the JICA assisted project is expected to commence from July and will focus on establishing a functional system for mass production of quality seeds and strengthening the training set up and extension mechanism.

Mr V. Dhananjaya Kumar, Union Minister of State for Textiles, said the Textiles Ministry was doubling assistance to sericulture projects so that the infrastructure at farmers level was upgraded, he added.

Mr P. Joy Oommen, Member Secretary, Central Silk Board (CSB), said the board had set a target of producing 7000 tonnes of bivoltine cocoons during the 10th plan, he said.
