Andhra Bank staff claim success -- Management refutes

HYDERABAD, March 27

WHILE the Employees Union of Andhra Bank claimed complete success of the strike on Wednesday at all the branches across the country, the management refuted this claim.

In a press release, the General Secretary of All India Andhra Bank Award Employees Union (AIABAEU), Mr B.S.R. Mohan Reddy, said the strike paralysed the total banking transactions in Andhra Bank. The employees at all branches throughout the country participated in the strike to make it a 100 per cent success.

According to him, cash transactions came to a total halt as the Officers refused to handle the cash transactions, which was the job of the employees who were on strike.

The management deployed police forces at the bank's headquarters here and attempted to prevent the peaceful protest demonstrations by the striking employees, Mr Reddy alleged.

However, the Andhra Bank Chairman and Managing Director, Mr B. Vasanthan, told Business Line that all the branches across the country, except in Kolkata, were open and near normality was maintained in customer services in all these branches. "The strike was partial,'' he said.

Meanwhile, the Employees Union has decided to call for a national strike on April 16 demanding recruitment of more workforce in the clerical and sub staff cadre to ensure better services to customers in the post-VRS period, Mr Mohan Reddy said.

The all India office bearers of the Union were scheduled to meet in Hyderabad on March 31 to decide the future course of strike actions.
