The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, with the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, Dr Anil Kakodkar, at the annual meeting of CII-Andhra Pradesh in Hyderabad on Monday.

HYDERABAD, March 25

ATTRACTING investments including foreign direct investments to Andhra Pradesh and achieving labour effectiveness are the main issues before the State and the Government is ready to work with the Confederation of Indian Industry towards them, the Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, said here on Monday.

Addressing a meeting of the CII held on the theme, "Growth through competitive and societal excellence'', he sought the help of CII to devise ways to promote and market products of DWCRA (Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas) groups which had raised a corpus fund of Rs 1,200 crore.

He said the State was keen on achieving 100 per cent literacy over the next five years and the infrastructure necessary for this was being created. A sum of Rs 2,500 crore would be spent on poverty alleviation in the next four years.

The Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission, Dr Anil Kakodkar, in his address on "Leading India towards excellence'', said that despite the progress achieved on different fronts, in terms of human development index, the country had to traverse a long distance.

He said that in view of the influence of other societies and markets on the country, it was necessary to maximise value-addition to domestic products to remain competitive.

He wanted the industry, academia and society to form a synergistic combination and fine-tune their areas of specialisation for coming out with internationally acceptable and cost-competitive products. For this they should nurture a number of centres of excellence, he said. The Dean of Indian School of Business, Dr Pramath Sinha, said strategies of growth were getting outmoded by equity. The former chairperson of CII State unit, Ms Sobhana Kamineni, announced the winners of CII awards, Coromandel Fertilisers and Shri Shakti LPG Ltd, for rainwater harvesting programme implementation.
