`TN textile stir due to misinformation'

The Union Minister of State for Textiles, Mr V. Dhananjaya Kumar, at the inauguration of Tantavi, an exhibition of natural fibre handloom textiles in Chennai on Saturday.

CHENNAI, March 23

THE Union Minister of State for Textiles, Mr V. Dhananjaya Kumar, has said that the textile strike in Tamil Nadu against imposition of excise duty on hank yarn is a result of misinformation. The rationale behind the imposition of excise duty is to prevent misuse and diversion of hank yarn.

The Minister said to offset this levy, the Government has given a 100 per cent duty refund to actual users and has set apart Rs 200 crore for this.

The Union Government had implemented various schemes to boost the handloom and powerloom sectors. Most of the schemes formulated by the Centre had be implemented by the State governments. The scheme to supply semi automatic looms at Paramakudi in Tamil Nadu was one such, he said.

The Minister was speaking at a press conference here on Saturday after the inauguration of Tantavi — an exhibition of handloom fabric woven with natural fibres by the Weaver Service Centre of the Textiles Ministry. Responding to a statement made earlier by the Tamil Nadu Minister of Handloom and Textiles, Mr V. Somasundaram, that Rs 41.34 crore was due to Tamil Nadu for the implementation of various schemes, Mr Dhananjaya Kumar said that the Centre had released the funds to Tamil Nadu and nothing was pending. Earlier at the inauguration of the exhibition, he said handloom weavers, especially in the South should move away from weaving the traditional saris and dhotis and start making more value-added products which have market appeal.

The exhibition is organised by Central Cottage Industries Corporation of India Ltd and Handicrafts and Handlooms Exports Corporation of India Ltd.
