KOCHI, March 20

THE Coir Board has come out with an ecomark logo for coir products manufactured in the country in a bid to boost the marketing of coir products in the domestic and foreign markets as an eco-friendly item.

According to Mr Christy Fernandez, Chairman, Coir Board, an earthen pot has been chosen as the logo for the ecomark scheme in India. The familiar earthen pot uses a renewable resource like earth, which does not produce hazardous waste and consumes little energy in making. Its solid and graceful form represents both strength and fragility, which also characterises the eco-system.

As a symbol, it puts across its environmental message. The image can help promote a greater awareness of the need to protect the environment, Mr Fernandez said. The ecomark signifies that the product which carries it does least damage to the environment.

He said that in the highly competitive market where there is a growing shift towards natural/ eco-friendly products, the ecomark would play a significant role in promoting coir products.

Meanwhile, Coir Board has renewed the accident insurance scheme for coir workers till November this year.

The scheme was introduced keeping in view of the drudgery, strain and hardship involved in coir processing activities such as extraction of fibre, spinning of coir yarn and manufacture of rope and finished products, a Coir Board source said.
