Environmentalists flay Govt policy on cashew plantations

MANGALORE, March 20

THE Dakshina Kannada Parisarasaktha Okkoota and Nagarika Seva Trust have strongly criticised the continued insistence of the Karnataka Government on `developing' cashew plantations in forest-land.

Pointing out the dismal performance of the State-owned Cashew Development Corporation (CDC) as an instance of the Government's skewed developmental policies, the environmentalists also said that it made no economic sense whatsoever to destroy natural forests and `develop' cashew plantations without taking into account the climatic and ecological realities of the Western Ghats.

Stating that the Government should immediately take back the 20,000 hectares of forest land leased out to the CDC, the environmentalists, who are now in the process of working out a comprehensive joint forestry management programme in the context of what they allege is the dismal record of the Government in protecting the State's forests, said that 13 regional conventions had already been held apart from a State-level meeting to finalise a people-friendly draft forest management plan.

Another convention in which the Chief Minister and other State functionaries are expected to participate is to be held in Bangalore by the end of this month.
