Oilseeds & Edible Oil Oilseeds output pegged at 20.1 mt Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, March 18 THE VMA Oilseeds Research and Development Institute (VORDI) has estimated the country's total oilseeds production to have recovered marginally to 201 lakh tonnes (lt) during 2001-02, as against the previous year's dismal output of 173.95 lt. Production of both kharif as well as rabi oilseeds at expected to be higher at 121.37 lt and 79.63 lt, respectively this year, compared to their corresponding 2000-01 levels of 109.44 lt and 64.51 lt, respectively. This is in spite of total area under oilseeds being over three lakh hectares lower than last year's level and almost 22 lakh hectares below the normal acreage of 256.53 lakh hectares. Output of the three major oilseeds groundnut, soyabean and rapeseed-mustard is estimated at 68.85 lt, 52.90 lt and 47.51 lt, respectively this year, which is higher than their corresponding levels of 55.56 lt, 50.56 lt and 35.85 lt. Sunflower output, too, is expected to go up from 8.21 lt to 9.15 lt, according to the Delhi-based research wing of the Vanaspati Manufacturers' Association of India.
