Coir Coir exports pick up in Feb Our Bureau
KOCHI, March 18 COIR exports picked up in February to take the total exports during April-February 2001-02 almost to the level of the same period last fiscal. The exports stood at 63,038 tonnes valued Rs 286.02 crore during the April-February 2001-02 as against 61,317 tonnes worth Rs 286.38 crore in the corresponding period last financial year. Thus, in terms of quantity there had been an increase of 1,721 tonnes so far this fiscal while there was a marginal decrease of Rs 36.24 lakhs in terms of value, according to Coir Board sources. The major items witnessed sharp decline were coir yarn, coir mattings and coir rugs and carpets while coir mats, coir pith, geotextiles etc had shown an appreciable increase. Attributing this trend to the tough competition from other natural fibres, Mr Christy Fernandez, Chairman, Coir Board, said natural fibre products such as of Chinese grass had become not only a major competitor but also a threat in the future. These products, he said, were cheaper, machine made and in attractive designs and colour. Only thinner, soft, colourful and designer coir products, especially rugs, carpets and matting, would be able to recapture the market. Concerted efforts were now on towards this direction so as to make the coir products more competitive in terms of price and designs, he added.
