Agriculture Govt board to promote toor dal Our Bureau
BANGALORE, March 17 IN a significant step forward to help toor dal cultivation, the Karnataka Government has issued a notification for setting up of the Karnataka Togari Abhiviridhi Mandali Niyamitha, a board to promote toor dal and also other pulses in the State. Announcing this in Gulbrga, the Public Works Minister, Mr N. Dharam Singh, said the board would undertake all promotional activities relating to toor, research and development on all aspects of cultivation and processing of the lentil by adopting latest technology. The board, to be registered under the provisions of the Companies Act with an authorised capital of Rs 5 crore fully subscribed to by the State Government, will act as agent of the Government in the exploitation for the full potential of toor cultivation. The board will act an effective catalyst in giving boost to production by identifying the right technologies and coordinating with the farmers in technology transfer from agricultural universities, national institutes of research, the corporate sector and international technology organisations. To be headquartered in Gulbarga, the board will be constituted with a Government nominated Chairman and the directors will be the Commissioner for Agriculture Marketing, the Commissioner for Industrial Development, the Registrar of Cooperative Societies, the Chief General Manager, Nabard, Bangalore, the Chief Scientist, (Pulses), University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Dharwad Chief Scientist (Pulses) and the Convenor of State-Level Banking Committee (SLBC). The board will also have four members from the farming community and one representative from the processing units. Toor is the major pulse crop of Northern Karnataka, particularly in Gulbarga, Bijapur, Belgaum, Raichur and Koppal. Of the 4.13 lakh hectares of land under toor cultivation in the State, 80 per cent are in these six regions.
