BANGALORE, March 17

THE Karnataka Government is likely to make a Budget provision to give out Rs 125 crore under the National Agricultural Insurance Scheme to farmers, according to the Agriculture Minister, Mr T. B. Jayachandra.

Speaking to reporters here, he said the money would be disbursed by May-June this year. Crop losses in the State for the year 2001-02 have been estimated at Rs 250 crore by the General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC).

The State is committed to pay 50 per cent of the amount and the rest will come from the Centre. Around six lakh farmers and 11 (including jowar, paddy, ragi, wheat, Bengal gram, groundnut, potato and maize) are covered under the insurance scheme.

In the year 2000-01, GIC's Rashtriya Krishi Bima Yojana settled the claims of 23,142 farmers who suffered crop loss by paying a total of Rs 3.26 crore.
