`HR is the key to success'

KOLKATA, March 15
"BE nice to people on your way up because you shall meet them on your way down," said Mr Vireh J. Shah, Governor of West Bengal, in inaugural address at the annual convocation of National Institute of Personnel Management on Thursday.
The Governor, whose quote seemed apt for a situation marked by the presence of leading experts on human resources, also spoke on the need to train employees in the fast-changing corporate environment.
"The primacy of HR as a leading force must be recognised by all; an organisation's only sustainable assets are its people," Mr Shah maintained, adding that personnel departments within organisations had lately assumed the role of policy makers. An effective personnel manager must, therefore, understand people's needs and aspirations. This, it was pointed out, was more true in the context of increasing competition, both domestic and global.
Management expert Dr Ram S Tarneja, in his keynote address, underlined the part played by youth in shaping society. "For both employers and professional managers, the modern society presented unique opportunities," he noted.
