CHENNAI, March 15
COMPANIES that are members of the southern region of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) will work with communities on water conservation through watershed development.
According to Mr R. Seshasayee, Past Chairman of CII-SR, the organisation will work with the State Governments to choose a few watersheds where it can work with the local communities on water conservation through technical interventions.
He said the solution to the problem of water could be found only within the triangle which has as its three points, community participation, conservation and technology development. CII's objective will be to work within these parameters.
Conservation of water would be possible only when a price was attached to the commodity, he said. This held true for all users of water, be it agriculture, industry, individuals or communities.
Over the years, members of the CII have been adopting environment management systems in their production facilities, according to Mr Seshasayee. For instance, Ashok Leyland, the company that he heads, saved about 15 per cent on water use last year accounting for a saving of Rs 87 lakh.
