MUMBAI, March 11

RELIANCE Industries Ltd today said it planned to expand its polyethylene terephthalate (PET) capacity to 300,000 tonnes from the present 80,000 tonnes.

The company has entered into an agreement with DuPont Polyester Technologies to licence the NG-3 technologies, to be used in the expansion.

The new plant will increase the company's polyester capacity to 1.2 million tonnes from the present 925,000 tonnes. The plant will produce high molecular weight PET resin to be used in the bottle market, the statement said. The new plant, based on NG-3 technology, will be located alongside the existing Relpet polyester packaging resin unit at Hazira. It will have a capacity of 220,000 tonnes per year, a statement said.

The company planned to export "significant volumes" of Relpet from the plant to overseas distribution and marketing networks, the statement said.
