IA aircraft hits a wall

NEW DELHI, March 8

AN Indian Airlines Airbus A-300B2 (VT-EFW) today suffered damages when it hit the airport security wall while being taxied from the engine run-up bay to the domestic operational area at the Indira Gandhi International airport here.

In a statement, the airline has said that the aircraft, which was to be used to operate the scheduled Delhi-Kolkata morning flight, "had a low-speed impact'' with the airport security wall.

"Despite the aircraft being at low speed, the front wheel of the aircraft was impacted when the incident occurred largely due to the weight of the aircraft itself," IA sources said.

However, the airline's schedule was not affected. IA has a strength of 56 aircraft including 11 Airbus A-300 aircraft, which are considered as the work horses of the fleet.

The exact nature of structural damage to the aircraft would become clear only after it has been removed from the accident site, officials said.

Senior officials from the airline and the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation visited the spot soon after the incident. The DGCA has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
