Punjab panel to explore crop diversification

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, March 7

IN a bid to diversify its agricultural production base away from wheat and rice, the Punjab Government has set up a committee to look into the viability of cultivating oilseeds and pulses in the State.

This was indicated by the new State Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, at a meeting with the Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Mr Shanta Kumar, here on Thursday.

The acreage under pulses and oilseeds have diminished substantially with the emergence of the paddy-wheat crop rotation as a stable and safe source of income for farmers. The total area under wheat in the State is currently around 34 lakh hectares while amounting to about 26 lakh hectares for rice. On the other hand, the corresponding acreages under pulses and oilseeds are estimated at hardly 80,000 hectares and 120,000 hectares, respectively.

Mr Shanta Kumar assured wheat procurement operations in the ensuing rabi marketing season would be `smooth as usual', according to an official release.
