Tea Fall in price realisation for tea Our Correspondent
COONOOR, March 7 AN analysis of the price behaviour at the tea auctions across the globe shows that teas fetched a lower realisation in 2001 over the previous year. The steepest fall of 24 per cent happened in Mombassa auctions in Kenya where the prices dipped on an average to $1.53 a kg from $2.02 in the previous year. The second steepest fall of 19 per cent came in Jakarta where the average prices dipped to 97 cents a kg from $1.20 the previous year. Limbe in Malawi lost 15 per cent to reach an average price of 87 cents. Colombo auctions posted a fall of eight per cent to average a price of $1.61 from $1.75 in 2000. India showed a collective fall of 5 per cent to dip to $1.3 from $1.37 in 2000. Of them, the North Indian auctions posted a steep fall of 5.73 per cent to dip to $1.48 a kg, while the south Indian auctions lost 2 per cent to fall to 97 cents a kg. Chittagong in Bangladesh posted the lowest fall of 3.67 per cent to average $1.05 a kg. The actual realisation of a mere 97 cents a kg in South India was the major problem faced by the producers.
