Coir exports decline in value

Our Bureau

KOCHI, March 4

EXPORTS of coir and coir products during April-January 2001-02 dropped by Rs 7.57 crore despite an increase in volume by 250 tonnes.

A total quantity of 55,487 tonnes of coir and coir products, valued at Rs 251.03 crore, were exported during this fiscal period as against 55,237 tonnes worth Rs 258.60 crore last year, according to a senior official of the Coir Board here.

Drop in unit value coupled with a sharp fall in the exports of high value items such as rugs and carpets, mattings and yarn had led to the reduction in total value realisation, he said. Added to this, was the tough competition from other natural and synthetic products.

The decline in exports of rugs and carpets, mattings etc, was a clear manifestation of the potential threat from jute products to the coir in the future, he pointed out.

As a result, many of the manufacturers of coir products exclusively had, of late, resorted to production of jute products for export.
