States CPI(M) meet calls for fresh look at policy Our Bureau
KOLKATA, Feb. 24 THE ongoing CPI(M) State conference has empowered the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, to implement policy initiatives keeping in view the changes in the global economy and at the same time protecting the interests of the common man. The empowerment came in the course of discussion on a document placed by Mr Nirupam Sen, State Industry Minister, at the conference. Entitled `Left Front Government and its tasks ahead,' the document talks about, among other things, global economy and the Left Front Government's need to reorient itself and its workers vis-a-vis issues such as disinvestment, private capital and the impact of liberalisation. Mr Sen, while addressing the conference, said that the proposed policies of the State Government should not be seen as an U-turn on its professed stand, but just a retuning of the existing policies in response to the changing times and implementation of the policy announcements made in 1994. ``The world is changing fast, really fast, and we will have to keep pace with it'', he said. However, in areas such as recruitment by the Government, he said that the West Bengal Government was not in favour of stopping it altogether like the Centre, but advocated a cautious approach while creating alternative job opportunities.
