`India ideal place for call centre business'

India is fast emerging as an ideal destination for call centres and IT-enabled services. Fluency in English, which is the universal language, availability of low-cost, skilled manpower and low attrition rates are major facilitators in this regard.

KOLKATA, Feb. 23

THE $200 billion global telephone-based services industry is growing at 23 per cent per annum, according to Mr Manoj Singhania, Regional Head of Aptech Computer Education.

Speaking at a seminar on ``Emerging careers in call centre industry'' here, Mr Singhania said India is fast emerging as an ideal destination for call centres and IT-enabled services. Fluency in English, which is the universal language, availability of low-cost, skilled manpower and low attrition rates are major facilitators in this regard.

According to him, nearly 70 per cent of the Fortune 500 companies outsource at least some part of their work to call centres globally. In fact, the global IT-enabled services industry — which has been referred to as the next major driver of the technology-led services industry — is expected to be of the order of $611 billion by 2005. With 27 out of the 40 SEI CMM Level 5 software companies located in India, the scope for Indian IT and IT-enabled services companies here is immense.

It has been estimated that the IT-enabled services industry in India was worth $870 million in 2000-2001, and has been growing at about 67 per cent per annum.

Back office management, transcription and content development offered scope for business growth, too.

Mr Singhania said Aptech has identified call centre training as a major growth area.
