Alliances & Joint Ventures Pfizer to set up academy for clinical excellence Our Bureau
MUMBAI, Feb. 15 PHARMACEUTICALS major Pfizer Ltd has tied up with Bombay College of Pharmacy to set up an Academy for Clinical Excellence. The company will provide financial support to the tune of $100,000 to the academy over the next five years. Speaking to newspersons, Dr Mohan Beltangady, Vice-President and Worldwide Head of Biostatistics & Reporting, Pfizer, said that the company's efforts towards this venture was based on the need for "good clinical research" in India, currently found wanting in many areas. The academy is to be set up in the premises of Bombay College of Pharmacy, with modules offering training programmes in clinical research methodology, data management and bio-statistics. "The standards for clinical development in India are not up to global standards, and the academy is the first step towards a long-term commitment in clinical development by Pfizer,'' said Mr Hocine Sidi Said, Managing Director, Pfizer India Ltd. "With the emergence of international conference on harmonisation initiative and acceptability of foreign data, more and more clinical trials are now being done in India,'' Dr Beltangady said. Pfizer is also exploring opportunities in India for clinical development of its drugs. "At the moment, we are conducting some trials in India as part of the global clinical development. We are also in touch with CROs (contract research organisations) for further development projects.'' Pfizer conducts about 10 studies a year in India in various therapeutic areas such as psychiatry, anti-infectives and metabolic diseases. According to Dr Beltangady, the company is exploring options that are more to do with development part of research rather than new drug discovery research (NDDR).
