Institute for organic farming soon

Our Bureau

COIMBATORE: The Union Government has proposed to set up a National Institute on Organic Farming in Ghaziabad very soon, Dr J.S. Samra, Deputy Director General (Natural Resource Management), ICAR, said.

He said the institute would mainly deal with accreditation, certification and setting standards for organic farming and organically grown products.

Calling upon the scientists to exercise caution in organic farming ventures, he said it was a zonal concept. Though a new and difficult technique, it led to sustainable agriculture, he said.

Commending the efforts of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in establishing a model organic farm in a 2.5 hectare area in the campus, he said organic products would be in great demand within the next ten years. ``The technique requires hard efforts for no synthetically produced substance or input can be used in crop cultivation''.
