Mining & Quarrying Improve mining technology: Paswan Our Bureau
BANGALORE, Feb. 6 THE Union Minister for Coal and Mines, Mr Ram Vilas Paswan, has called for reducing the existing lag between the level of technology in the Indian mines and quarries and some of their counterparts in the developed countries. Inaugurating Stona 2002, the Fifth International Granites and Stones Fair in Bangalore, Mr Paswan said, "the knowhow can be acquired only through interaction. The existing investment gap in the mining sector needs to be bridged by the private sector, and more importantly by the multinational corporations.'' Mr Paswan said the country was looking for the latest technological and management expertise which could improve productivity through good planning and design of mines and by reducing costs. The five-day fair organised by the All-India Granites and Stones Association (AIGSA) is aimed at projecting the stone industry in the world market. It has attracted participation from various countries, including China, Italy and Spain. Mr Vinay Poddar, President of AIGSA, said the country met nearly 10 per cent of the world's stone requirements. Stone exports crossed Rs 2,350 crore last year, registering a growth of 30 per cent over the previous year.
