Shipping Vizag port set to lead in throughput Our Bureau
VISAKHAPATNAM, Feb. 6 WITH less than two months to go for the close of the 2001-2002 financial year, Vizag port seems all set to emerge as the country's premier port in terms of cargo throughput for the second consecutive year. Having notched up a throughput of 37.08 million tonnes in the current fiscal till the end of January, Vizag port is leading its nearest competitor, Kandla port, by a huge margin of almost six m.t. Kandla port, which handled 31.06 m.t. of cargo, is most likely to end up in the second position, followed by Chennai port, which handled 30.5 m.t. till January-end. Overall, the major ports in India have marginally fallen short of the target set by the Ministry of Shipping during the first ten months of the current fiscal. As against a target of 238.49 m.t., the major ports handled a combined throughput of 237.07 m.t., the shortfall being 0.59 per cent. According to figures released by the Indian Ports Association (IPA), seven out of the 13 ports fell short of the Ministry's target, the biggest negative growth having been recorded by the recently commissioned Ennore port (-38.7 per cent), followed by Kolkata Dock System (-33.7 per cent), Kochi port (-12.08 per cent), New Mangalore port (-9.02 per cent), Mumbai port (-2.61 per cent) and Kandla port (-0.54 per cent).
