NEW DELHI, Feb. 4

THE Prime Minister, Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee, on Monday sought to dispel apprehensions regarding labour reforms..

"Labour reforms are not anti-worker. The Government would abide by its responsibility to protect the interest of workers," Mr Vajpayee saidat a function here after presenting the Shram Awards.

Mr Vajpayee called for a debate with an open mind by all political parties on labour laws that would help the Indian industry and services sector to become more competitive.

The Prime Minister also said that the Government was closing down only those public sector undertakingsthat could not be revived.

He said that India would not follow globalisation blindly but instead "devise our own standards that meet the needs and aspirations of the society as the big challenge of job creation stares us on our faces."

Mr Vajpayee also hoped that the Second National Labour Commission would give its report soon.
