Events Industry & Economy - Leather Global leather body chooses 22 colours from India Our Bureau
CHENNAI, Jan. 27 AROUND 22 colours from India have been selected this year by Modeurop, an international colour forecasting authority for the footwear and leather garment industry, according to Dr T. Ramasami, Director, Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI). Dr Ramasami was speaking at the inauguration of the 36th Leather Research Industry get together (LERIG) 2000 where the Modeurop awards for successful colours were also distributed. Speaking at the function, Mr M.M. Hashim, Chairman KH Group, said that in the last few years there had been a number of changes in production, design and marketing of leather products. In international markets, Indian leather faced competition from China in prices and from Italy in design, he said. Indian exporters would have to decide which model they would like to adopt, he said.In his view both these models could be adopted in India. Another new trend, Mr Hashim said, was the increased demand for leather products in the domestic market, which had gone up by eight to nine per cent. Meanwhile, the leather industry had had to contend with two major issues in the recent years - environment concerns and ethical treatment of animals, Mr Hashim said. While the environment concerns were being sorted out with Government aid, Mr Hashim said that the ethical issues raised by NGOs were of great concern to the leather industry.
