CHENNAI, Jan. 25

THE Indian leather sector wants to concentrate on strategic action and aggressive marketing in the next five years in order to corner 10-14 per cent of the global marketshare, according to the Director of the Central Leather Research Institute, Dr T. Ramasami.

Speaking to newspersons about this year's Leather Research Industry Get-together (LERIG), Dr Ramasami said India has reached a stage when its finished leather has a quality that is recognised worldwide. "This and the good raw material base in the country have to be combined with good technologies and aggressive marketing to get a strong global marketshare."

To design a plan of action for this, LERIG will have the theme of `Technology Export Marketing Plan for Leather Sector' (TEMPLES), he said. The plan will be drawn up by the CLRI, the industry and the Government.

According to him, 40 per cent of the global market is for footwear, in which India enjoys only one per cent share. "To increase this share, there is a need to produce good quality components in the country. So, for forward planning, there would also be stress on the growth of the component industry."
