Policy Info-Tech - Telecommunications National frequency allocation plan okayed Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, Jan. 25 THE Union Minister for Communications, Mr Pramod Mahajan, has approved the National Frequency Allocation Plan - 2002 (NFAP) for optimal utilisation of the radio frequency spectrum, which is a limited resource. According to an official statement, the NFAP- 2002, developed within the framework of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) would meet the requirements of the Government as well as the private sector. The Wireless Planning Co-ordination Committee (WPCC) under the Chairmanship of Mr Shyamal Ghosh, Secretary, Department of Telecommunications had adopted the plan at its last meeting in December 2001, with due emphasis on use of spectrum-efficient technology so that the scarce resource of radio frequency spectrum could be used "rationally, optimally, efficiently and economically." The NFAP-2002 caters to the requirements for IT-based applications, local multi-point distribution systems, microwave multi- point distribution systems, mobile radio trunked systems, WLL systems, microcellular WLL systems and GSM cellular systems. It also is applicable to IMT-2000 applications, rural telecommunication systems, cordless telephone systems, low power cable replacement devices, train control and safety systems, electricity supervisory control and data acquisition systems, FM broadcasting and space services among others.
