Post-connection services -- Maptech is VSNL agent for Chennai

Raja Simhan T.E

CHENNAI, Jan. 20

VIDESH Sanchar Nigam Ltd has appointed the Chennai-based Maptech Infosoft (P) Ltd as its authorised agent to service its users in the Chennai circle on `post-Internet connection related problems'. For the first time in the country, and as a pilot project, VSNL has appointed such an authorised agent, sources at VSNL here said.

As per the agreement, all complaints, other than those concerning VSNL, would be handled by Maptech, which volunteered to do the service. This would help VSNL reduce cost on offering such service, hitherto done free of cost, said sources. The authorised agent would offer `doorstep' services to VSNL Internet users for a nominal fee, sources added.

According to the sources, VSNL, Chennai, receives around 1,500 complaints from its users every month. Of this, about 70 per cent were not related to VSNL, but were problems such as Internet trouble-shooting, configuration of the Internet account, error in modem connection and minor problems in the PC. "Even though the problems would not concern VSNL, we were still sending our engineers at our cost," the sources said. If the pilot project was successful, more such authorised agents are likely to be appointed," the sources added.

Maptech would also offer free service for purchasing Internet account or renewal of the existing VSNL account will be done at the customers' location. By this, users can avoid the hassle of commuting to VSNL office, said VSNL sources.

VSNL has retailers and agents across the country to resell its pre-paid Internet cards and also distribute various services of the organisation.

Mr K. Gangadharan, Director, Maptech Infosoft, said that in addition to Internet troubleshooting and configuring Internet account and modem problems, the company would offer other value-added services such as Internet seminar programme, banking on Internet and effective utilisation of Internet.
