Coir exports drop in value terms

G.K. Nair

KOCHI, Jan. 17

EXPORTS of coir and coir products from the country increased in terms of quantity during the first nine months of the current fiscal. However, exports declined in terms of value by Rs 2.78 crore.

During April-December 2001, the exports stood at 50,526 tonnes valued at Rs 230.80 crore as against 50,133 tonnes worth Rs 233.58 crore in the corresponding period last year.

The drop in exports was mainly attributed to the decline in the export of high value coir mattings which fell to 3,949 tonnes valued at Rs 26.83 crore from 5,210 tonnes worth Rs 35.89 crore during Apr-Dec 2000, a senior official said.
