Events A desi show
TATA Engineering had a wholly desi fare in store for the unveiling of the Indica sedan. The slick 27-minute programme had a video show of Tata vehicles interspersed with shots from the various regions of India and its people.
There was simultaneously a live performance of different dance and art forms ranging from the kalaripayattu and mohini attam from Kerala to the Rajasthani and Goan folk dances. The company also got former Miss India, Ms Manpreet Brar, to compere the whole show. In attendance was the entire top brass from Tata Engineering apart from Mr R. Gopalakrishnan, Executive Director, Tata Sons, Mr Krishnakumar, Managing Director, Indian Hotels.
Power fails, yet again
IT was darkness yet again at an inaugural function. And it was Tata Engineering's turn. Well into the programme, the power failed just when dancers were in the midst of their number. And there was embarrassment in store for former Miss India, Ms Manpreet Brar. Just when she decided to return to the stage and announce her apologies for the erratic power, the lights came on catching her apparent embarrassment in all glory.
Celebrity or not?
THAT question remained at the end of the press conference addressed by Mr Ratan Tata along with top officials of Tata Engineering. A correspondent asked whether the company was planning to have a celebrity endorsement for the sedan on the lines of the Sachin Tendulkar-Palio endorsement.
Mr Tata preferred to leave the question for Mr Rajiv Dube, Vice-President, Passenger Car Business Unit, to answer saying ``he's closer to the celebrities than I am''. Not to be outdone, Mr Dube came back saying that he did not feel the need for any celebrity endorsement asthe Tata brand name was greater than any celebrity that one could think of.
``Our current Chairman is a celebrity himself'', Mr Dube said, causing a red-faced Mr Tata to retort, ``There can be a different opinion on that''.
