Education New IIMT campus for course in hospitality Our Bureau
KOLKATA, Jan. 10 THE Institute for International Management and Technology (IIMT) has forged a partnership with GGL Hotel & Resort - a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gujarat Ambuja Cement Ltd - Carlson Hospitality Worldwide, Edwardian Group (UK) and Unitech India to set up the second IIMT campus at nearby Raichak. IIMT will offer a B.Sc (Hons) programme in Hotel & Restaurant Management (HRM), the degree for which will be conferred by Oxford Brookes University of the UK, according to Mr Kamlesh Misra, Director of IIMT. He told newspersons that the 3-year, 4-month programme - which includes one year of industrial experience in India or abroad - would be conducted at a campus located within the grounds of the Fort Radisson Resort at Raichak. On successful completion of the course, students will be awarded an Oxford Brookes University B.Sc (Hons) degree in Hotel & Restaurant Management. The Gujarat Ambuja group - which is the local partner and infrastructure provider - has invested Rs 5 crore in the venture. The course content on offer would be the same as that offered at Oxford Brookes University. The delivery modules will also be the same. The only difference would be in the citing of local examples keeping similar contexts in view. The course would be delivered through 30 modules. There will be three terms every year and students would have to pass at least 24 modules to qualify for a graduate degree. Mr Misra said that the course was essentially a business management programme focused on the hospitality industry. ``The programme is aimed at training managers for the hospitality industry in areas such as finance, marketing, human resources etc, besides of course providing basic technical training in hotel management." Prof Grant Clendining, Principal Lecturer in the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management, Oxford Brookes University, said that the diploma programmes in hotel management currently on offer in India did help produce good technical diploma holders, but with limited managerial capabilities. The Oxford Brookes' B.Sc. programme in Hotel Management is aimed at imparting managerial prowess in addition to technical skills. "This is in tune with the emerging needs in the global hospitality industry. The course offered is quality-controlled by the British system as well." A total of 60 students will be trained in each of the two IIMT campuses. Students selected for the course would have to pay Rs 43,000-45,000 per term towards course fees and lodging & boarding charges. Besides, they would have to pay £267 per year to Oxford Brookes University towards quality control and registration fees.
