Environment Emission norms: Green lobby sees red Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, Jan. 8 THE Centre for Science and Environment on Tuesday criticised the Mashelkar Committee report on automobile fuel policy, mainly the recommendation regarding the delayed introduction of tighter emission norms. The environment lobby group also took objection to the committee's observation that a prescribed fuel technology and type was not the solution to the problems faced due to automobile pollution. ``In the absence of an effective road map, you needed to mandate at least the technology. Since the Mashelkar Committee report has pushed back the emission norms, we reject the pollution-friendly report,'' Ms Sunita Narain, Director of the science centre, said at a press conference here. Incidentally, the Cabinet on Tuesday approved the implementation of the recommendations of the committee. Stating that it was deeply disappointed with the report, the science centre said the road map laid for automobile fuel standards was ``so weak and uncaring about public health objectives and virtually denies millions of urban Indians the right to clean air.''
