Tirupur knitwear exports down 9%

G Gurumurthy

COIMBATORE, Jan 3

KNITWEAR exports from Tirupur have dropped both in quantity and value during the 2001 calendar year compared to the previous year.

The total volume of knitted garment shipment exported during the year fell by 9.2 per cent at 3,863 lakh pieces, as against 4,255 lakh pieces during the 2000 calendar year.

In value terms, there has been a 7.46 per cent decline this year, down to $753.9 million against $814.7 million in 2000.

The performance of Tirupur-based knitwear exports, for most part of the year under review, has broadly fallen in line with the general declining trend seen in the overall textile export from the country.

The monthly data on exports compiled by the apparel export promotion council has indicated that barring the May-July period, knitwear exports registered negative growth.

During this period, exports remained impressive with growth ranging between 17 per cent and 24 per cent.

Though the council's export figures do not include the shipment to non-quota countries/non-quota items to quota markets, it still does not alter the overall performance much as the bulk of the shipments from Tirupur are directed to the quota countries.

The September 11 WTC attacks, whose impact was widely felt in the country's textiles exports, cast a spell on knitwear exports too.

Shipments fell by over 14 per cent in September and the situation worsened by November with exporters being able to ship hardly 278 lakh pieces, compared to 384 lakh pieces in 2000, a drop of 28 per cent.

Perhaps the only saving feature for garment shippers has been a marginal rise in unit value.

As against the export price of $1.91 apiece realised in 2000, the per unit value of the knitwear exported in 2001 is up by 1.9 per cent at $1.95.
