Corporatisation of farming

In `Only rich should become richer' (Business Line, January 2), the author has cautioned against the dangers that small and marginal farmers may face, if corporatisation of farming is encouraged.

The industrial sector can aid the agricultural sector in providing technology, technical assistance, equipment, information, and so on, to increase productivity.

There were reports that a project launched by Mahindra and Mahindra in Vadipetti taluk of Madurai district in Tamil Nadu helped the farmers increase the productivity of rice from 2 tonnes to 3.6 tonnes. Corporates can also help in building infrastructure facilities for storage, making value-added products, marketing, and so on. If the surplus farm workers could be absorbed in agro-industries, agriculture could become more profitable.

The corporate sector could develop wastelands. Agriculture and industry could supplement each other's growth. But if the entry of the corporate sector could make farmers labourers on their own lands, the laws may need to be amended to avoid that.
