Bearish trend in turmeric likely to continue
The sticky price-production phenomenon exhibited by turmeric during the earlier years is likely to continue during the current season. Turmeric prices are expected to look up only in the 2002-03 season, according to market sources.

Coffee may break free from bear-hug
THE global coffee market which saw prices dip to a 30-year low is likely to break out of the long bear hug during 2001-02, thanks to gradually tightening supply conditions. With world production showing a slight decline including in some key-producing co untries and domestic use in exporting countries forecast to increase by 2 per cent during the year, ending stocks are likely to be squeezed by over 10 per cent. This is expected to lead to a price rebound.

Sheet, block rubber dip a tad
KOTTAYAM: Both sheet rubber and block rubber dipped a tad on low buying interest in the market on Monday. The State Trading Corporations (STC) disinterest in price support procurement despite assurance of the Union Finance Minister, Mr Yashwant Sinha, to make good its previous loss of Rs 51 crore due to rubber procurement, also dampened market sentiments.

EVEN as sugar mills in Maharashtra are planning to aggressively tap the international market over the next 3-4 months keeping in view Brazils impending entry, the trade is not all that sanguine about immediate as well as medium-term export prospects.

Darjeeling planters seek loan to improve soil structure
THE Darjeeling tea industry has requested the Tea Board to include a loan and subsidy scheme for improving the soil structure of tea gardens in the hilly districts as also for the re-plantation scheme.

TN to strengthen `Ooty Tea' project
THE Tamil Nadu Government is taking steps to strengthen the ``Ooty Tea'` project, launched to bring about an improvement in the return to the small growers of the Nilgiris. The Commissioner of Industries, Mr. Skandan, told Business Line that there had be en a good response from the consumers for the project.
