Banking and Finance
The VRS exodus
According to reports, the VRS scheme of banks has triggered the exodus of a disproportionate number of skilled personnel, mostly officers, while a larger number of clerical staff have opted to stay back. However, the apprehension that this will result i n a further erosion of efficiency in banks is not well-founded.

Politics
Extension of ceasefire
Amidst doubts of possible withdrawal of unilateral announcement of ceasefire on the borders, the Government has decided to have another extension.

States
Lessons from Gujarat quake
While the Gujarat earthquake may be a natural calamity, the gravity of the disaster is manmade. This is evident in the poor management of relief operations. Corruption and the total absence of civic sense have become the hallmarks of our society.
