Consumer Notes
Heaters -- not too cool
Once again, Insight, the magazine brought out by the Consumer Education Research Centre (CERC) has come out with its test reports on immersion heaters.

Corporate
The corporate blackbelt
The qualities of a warrior and those of a successful businessman are closely similar and are also interchangeable. As philosopher Eric Hoffer points out, the world's foremost warriors have become the world's foremost traders and vice versa.

Where the pros go
In my dojo, out of 9 seniors, one is Chennai's leading eye surgeon, another is a leading ophthalmologist, yet another is a high profile Chartered Accountant and Financial Consultant, 2 are successful businessmen, one is an up-and-coming software pro, another an up-and-coming logistics pro, one is a professional karateka ...and then there's me. And there's a similar profile in most other dojos too.

Wake up sleeping dogs
Do you feel that your thinking is muddled and that you are confused most of the time? Want a foolproof way to test your strategic planning skills and to improve them? If the answer to any of the above is `yes', the solution is simple: bite a dog. An easy way to raise your strategic IQ is to find a sleeping dog in a large open space, sneak up behind him, and bite him in the hind leg. The events that unfold after that will be a good indicator of your planning skills. Nothing clarifies the mind so much as to have a large angry dog bounding after you.

Food & Dairy Products
Mexican marvels
Holiday Inn Pune's Indian restaurant, Rangmahal, wore an entirely different look for 10 days when the hotel flew down Mexican chefs Sergio and Roberto for a gastronomic adventure, aptly titled Latino. For the uninitiated, Latino means joyful life, rhythm , songs and lively dancing.

Miscellaneous

Coming next...
India is a diverse country, it has often been said, but recently, suddenly, the cliche seemed to spring to life.

Online panhandlers
So, you saw that beggar yesterday on the street and wondered... how much money does he make everyday? How much does one give? What does he do with the money?

Making room for the President
Seldom has the visit of a head of state created so much of excitement. Everything concerning the visit of the US President, Bill Clinton, right down to the smallest detail, has been the object of intense speculation. Where will he go? What will he do? Wh ere will he stay?

Textiles

The `soft' corner for silks
The `Silk King' will turn 60 this year. Looking back from the new millennium, Nalli Kuppusami Chettiar has much to be happy about. The Nalli empire extends far beyond the borders of Chennai to commercial centres such as Bangalore, Coimbatore (the textile city), Tiruchi and Madurai, going right down to Tirunelveli, the tip of the South.

Travel & Places

For some snow in summer
The locals proudly refer to it as the `soul of Kumaon'. About 3.5 km long and 500 metres wide, the Pindari glacier is situated to the north of Almora District. It owes its existence primarily to the vast quantities of snow precipitated from the Nanda Dev i and other surrounding summits of the Greater Himalayan range.

This zoo needs friends
Kala and Murugan are rather unusual names for a pair of hippopotamuses which are denizens of the African swamps. So is Arumugham for a European brown bear. The South American jaguars are called Shyam and Lakshmi.
